A Routine Visit That Wasn't So Routine

Earlier this summer, a customer brought in a mid-2000s Honda Accord for a general pre-summer check. No warning lights, no complaints, just wanting peace of mind before a family road trip. That's the kind of visit where you expect to top off fluids and send someone on their way.

When our tech pulled the radiator cap and checked the coolant, the fluid was a murky brown with visible sediment. That alone tells you the coolant has been breaking down and the system hasn't been flushed in a long time. We flagged it immediately and started a closer look.

What the Diagnostic Process Turned Up

We pressure-tested the cooling system and found the radiator holding pressure lower than spec. A visual inspection confirmed a hairline crack along the lower tank seam, the kind that weeps coolant slowly under normal driving temps but opens up fast once the engine gets hot in stop-and-go traffic. The overflow reservoir was nearly empty, which explained why the system was running low without an obvious puddle in the driveway.

We also checked the upper and lower radiator hoses. The lower hose had gone soft and was collapsing slightly under suction, a sign the inner lining was deteriorating. The Condition of the Coolant Itself

The coolant's pH had dropped well out of range, meaning it had lost its corrosion inhibitors. Degraded coolant attacks aluminum components, including the water pump housing and heater core. This car's water pump showed early pitting on the impeller when we pulled it for inspection, which is a direct result of running acidic coolant too long.

A cooling system flush at regular intervals prevents exactly this kind of internal corrosion. Fresh coolant keeps the pH stable and protects the metal surfaces the system depends on to move heat out of the engine.

What Early Intervention Actually Prevented

We replaced the radiator, both hoses, the water pump, and the thermostat, then flushed and refilled the system with the correct OEM-spec coolant. The customer made their road trip without incident. Had the radiator crack opened fully on the highway, the engine would have overheated within minutes, and a warped cylinder head or cracked block is a repair that costs several times what the cooling system work did.

This isn't a rare scenario. We see similar conditions on vehicles throughout Mishawaka every summer, especially on cars that have been maintained on oil changes alone without attention to the cooling system. Coolant degrades, hoses age, and radiators develop fatigue cracks quietly over years of thermal cycling.

What a Cooling System Inspection Covers

When we inspect a cooling system, we pressure-test the radiator and cap, check hose condition inside and out, inspect the water pump for bearing play and seal leaks, test coolant concentration and pH, and look at the thermostat operation. We also check the overflow reservoir and the condition of the heater core connections. It's a complete picture of how the system is actually holding up, not just a visual glance under the hood.
